Spain TIE / NIE Photo Requirements 2026
The Spanish TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) is the physical residence card issued to non-EU citizens living in Spain. Photo specification: 26×32 mm portrait on a plain light background — the same Spain-specific format as the DNI and passport. The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is the foreigner ID number written on the TIE; it does not require its own separate photo. In practice, the police station (Comisaría) captures a digital photo at the TIE appointment, but you should bring two printed copies as backup.
Key details
- TIE photo specification is 26×32 mm — the Spanish national format, not the 35×45 mm Schengen format.
- The NIE (foreigner ID number) is printed on the TIE; the NIE itself does not require a photo.
- Comisaría captures a digital photo at the TIE appointment; your printed photos are a backup.
- TIE renewal also uses this specification — 2 identical photos when applying in person.
