申請場所
The Italian Embassy or Consulate competent for your place of legal residence — never the Italian consulate at your travel destination. In most countries, document collection and biometric capture are outsourced to VFS Global (visa.vfsglobal.com/.../ita), though the consulate retains decision-making authority. From 1 June 2026, the official application portal is e-applicationvisa.esteri.it; visa categories and consulate-specific checklists are published at vistoperitalia.esteri.it. Appointments are mandatory and must be booked online — walk-ins are not accepted. Apply no earlier than 6 months before travel (9 months for seafarers) and no later than 15 calendar days before departure.

Study visas (Type D) are free of charge under Italian law. Children aged 6–12 applying for a Type D pay a reduced ~€40. Fees are non-refundable even if the visa is denied. VFS Global (Italy's outsourcing partner in most countries) charges an additional service fee of roughly €30–€45 depending on jurisdiction, plus optional courier and SMS services. Fees are paid in local currency at the quarterly MAECI exchange rate (updated 1 Jan, 1 Apr, 1 Jul, 1 Oct).

National Type D visas typically take 30–90 days, with work and family-reunification categories often near the upper end because they depend on prior nulla osta issuance by the Sportello Unico Immigrazione.
