Germany University Student ID (Studierendenausweis) Photo 2026

The Studierendenausweis is a campus card issued by your university — not a government body — so requirements differ from one institution to the next. Some universities print your photo on the card and ask you to upload one during enrolment, while many issue photoless chip cards. When a photo is required it is usually a normal portrait of 35×45 mm on a plain light background; it does not have to be biometric, though a few universities do ask for a biometric-format photo.

Key details

  • Whether a photo is needed depends entirely on the university; many campus cards have no photo at all.
  • When required, a normal 35×45 mm portrait is usually enough — most universities do not demand the strict biometric standard.
  • Always check your university's enrolment instructions for the exact photo format and upload method.

Shared rules with the country overview

These apply to every document this country issues — see the full breakdown on the country page.

Background

Plain light grey is the official requirement. Pure white is also widely accepted in practice. No patterns, no shadows behind the head.

Expression and eyes

Strictly neutral expression with mouth closed. Both eyes open, looking directly into the camera. Smiling is explicitly disallowed for biometric photos.

Glasses

Glasses are discouraged. If worn, no reflections on the lenses, no tinted lenses, and the eyes must be fully visible. Thick frames covering the eyes will be rejected.

Recency

The photo must have been taken within the last six months and must reflect your current appearance.
