US Citizenship Photo Requirements (N-400) 2026
For the US naturalization application (Form N-400), USCIS requires the same 2×2 inch (51×51 mm) passport-style photo as the State Department uses for passports. The head must measure 25–35 mm from chin to crown, on a plain white or off-white background, taken within the last 30 days of submission.
Key details
- USCIS asks for the photo to be taken within the last 30 days of N-400 submission — stricter than the six-month passport rule.
- Two identical photos are required when mailing the N-400 application.
- Lightly print your A-number on the back of each photo in pencil before mailing.
