Mexico INE/IFE Voter ID вимоги 2026

The Credencial para Votar con Fotografía (INE card, formerly IFE) is issued by the Instituto Nacional Electoral to all Mexican citizens aged 18 or older. It is both the official voter registration document and Mexico's primary national photo ID — used to open bank accounts, sign contracts, prove identity at any government counter, and vote in federal, state and municipal elections. Eligibility: (1) be Mexican by birth or by naturalization, (2) be 18 years or older on or before election day, (3) be in full enjoyment of civic rights (no firm criminal conviction suspending political rights). Three trámite categories cover everyone: first-time issuance (inscripción), renewal at the end of the 10-year vigencia (renovación por vigencia), and replacement for loss, theft, deterioration, or data change (reposición). Mexicans living outside Mexico — including dual-nationals — can apply at any Mexican consulate worldwide for the Credencial para Votar desde el Extranjero (CPVE), valid for the same 10 years and accepted as full ID inside Mexico on return.

Inside Mexico: book a free appointment at https://citas.ine.mx (online booking is required at almost all módulos in 2026 — walk-ins are limited) or call INETEL toll-free at 800 433 2000, then attend in person at any Módulo de Atención Ciudadana (MAC) — there are ~900+ módulos nationwide. You may choose any state and municipality, regardless of where you live, but your address on the credencial must match the comprobante de domicilio you bring. From abroad: schedule a consular appointment via https://miconsulado.sre.gob.mx at the Mexican consulate or embassy serving your circumscripción consular. The consulate acts as the receiving office; the INE produces and ships the credencial. Online tracking for both routes is at https://consulta-tramite.ine.mx using the folio printed on the comprobante you receive after your appointment.

The INE credencial is completely FREE in every variant — there is no fee, ever, for first-time issuance, renewal, replacement after loss or theft, address update, or for Mexicans abroad. INE has stated publicly and repeatedly throughout 2026 that the trámite is "gratuito y personal" and that anyone charging money to "manage" or "guarantee" an appointment is committing fraud, punishable under electoral law. The photo capture at the módulo is included. For Mexicans abroad, the INE pays the international courier fee to deliver the physical card to the address you registered. The only legitimate cost you might incur is collateral: parking, transport to the módulo or consulate, and obtaining supporting documents (a certified copy of a Mexican acta de nacimiento costs MXN 90–290 depending on the Registro Civil, and any apostilles or translations for documents issued abroad).

Appointment lead time at citas.ine.mx varies sharply by módulo and city — high-demand modules in CDMX, Monterrey and Guadalajara routinely book 3–6 weeks out, while smaller cities and rural módulos often have slots within 7–10 days. The on-site appointment itself takes 30–45 minutes (CURP verification, photo capture, fingerprints, iris scan, signature). Card production at the INE central facility plus shipment back to the same módulo takes 5–30 calendar days; the exact delivery date is printed on your comprobante. You then pick up the physical card at the same módulo where you applied — bring the comprobante and ID. The INE holds the card for up to 2 years before it is destroyed. Status can be checked online at https://consulta-tramite.ine.mx after about 7 days. From abroad, end-to-end is longer: 3 to 5 weeks from the consular appointment for the courier to arrive at your registered address.

How much does the INE credencial cost in 2026? +

It is completely FREE — every variant (first-time, renewal at 10 years, replacement for loss or theft, address update) is gratuito. INE has stated officially that the trámite is "gratuito y personal" and that anyone charging to "manage" or "guarantee" an appointment is committing fraud subject to administrative and criminal sanctions under electoral law. The only legitimate cost is collateral (transport, parking, MXN 90–290 for a certified acta de nacimiento copy if you do not have one).

How long is the INE credencial valid? +

10 years from the date of issuance. The expiry year is printed on the front of the card (look for "Vigencia 20XX"). You can begin the renovación trámite up to 12 months before expiry and the credencial remains valid for ID and voting purposes until the printed date.

How do I book an INE appointment? +

Go to https://citas.ine.mx, enter your CURP, choose the trámite type (inscripción, renovación, reposición, cambio de domicilio, corrección de datos), pick a state, municipality and módulo, and select an available date and time. Save or print the folio. The only legitimate booking channels are citas.ine.mx and the toll-free INETEL line 800 433 2000 — anyone else asking for money or personal data is a scam.

What if my INE was lost or stolen? +

Call INETEL at 800 433 2000 to file a report and receive a reporte folio valid for 30 calendar days. Then book a reposición appointment at citas.ine.mx and attend within those 30 days with your acta de nacimiento, comprobante de domicilio (≤3 months) and another photo ID if you have one. Since 2019, no Ministerio Público denuncia is required. The reposición is free.

Can Mexicans living abroad get the INE? +

Yes — the Credencial para Votar desde el Extranjero (CPVE) is issued at any Mexican consulate or embassy worldwide and is valid for 10 years as full identification inside Mexico. Book at https://miconsulado.sre.gob.mx, bring acta de nacimiento, a Mexican passport or matrícula consular, and a foreign comprobante de domicilio. INE produces the card in Mexico and ships it by international courier to your registered address in 3–5 weeks, free of charge.

Do I need to bring my own photo to the INE módulo? +

No. The INE captures your photo, fingerprints, iris scan and signature on-site as part of the biometric registration — this is mandatory and you cannot substitute a printed photo. Practising your pose with our 35×45 mm preview before your appointment helps you arrive prepared (neutral expression, ears visible, no glasses unless medically required).

How can I track my INE credencial? +

Use the official tracker at https://consulta-tramite.ine.mx — enter the folio printed on the comprobante you received at the módulo. Status updates appear about 7 days after your appointment. The site shows "En producción", "En tránsito al módulo" and "Disponible para recoger". You then pick the card up in person at the same módulo where you applied; bring the comprobante and an ID.

What documents do I need for the first INE credencial? +
