Brazil Passport Photo Requirements 2026

Detailed requirements

Background

Plain white only. No textures, patterns, or shadows. Off-white is not officially accepted.

Expression and eyes

Neutral expression, mouth closed, both eyes open. A natural slight smile is sometimes tolerated but a wide smile is rejected.

Glasses

Glasses are allowed if there is no glare and the eyes are fully visible. Sunglasses and tinted lenses are not permitted.

Headwear

No headwear except for daily religious wear that does not cover the face.

Recency

The photo must have been taken within the last six months and must reflect your current appearance.

Digital format

For online passport appointment booking via the Polícia Federal portal, digital photos must be JPEG, between 100 KB and 1 MB, minimum 600×800 pixels.

Country-specific notes

  • Brazil uses an unusually large 50×70 mm format — larger than most countries.
  • The CNH (driving licence) uses a smaller 30×40 mm format with different rules.
  • In practice, the Polícia Federal often takes a new photo at your appointment — bring two printed copies in case of system failure.

Common rejection reasons

These are the most frequent reasons passport offices reject submitted photos.

  1. 1 Photo is the typical 35×45 mm size instead of the Brazilian 50×70 mm.
  2. 2 Background is not pure white.
  3. 3 Wide smile or showing teeth.
  4. 4 Glasses cause glare on the lenses.
  5. 5 Photo is older than six months.
  6. 6 Head tilted or not facing the camera.

How to take it yourself in 3 steps

1

Find a plain white wall

Stand 0.5 m from a pure white wall. Diffuse daylight in front, no shadow behind your head.

2

Take a neutral shot

Camera at eye level, 1.5 m away. Look directly into the lens, mouth closed, neutral expression.

3

Output Brazilian format

Photo must be 50×70 mm — larger than most other countries. Our app outputs the correct Brazilian format automatically.
