UK Driving Licence Photo Requirements 2026
The DVLA accepts the same 35×45 mm photo specification as HM Passport Office for the UK driving licence. The head must measure 29–34 mm from chin to crown, on a plain light grey or cream background. Online renewals can re-use your existing passport photo if it is less than ten years old.
Key details
- For online renewals, DVLA can re-use the photo from your passport if you have one issued in the last ten years.
- Paper applications require a recent printed photo plus the photo declaration form D1.
- First-time provisional licence applications require a photo that someone has signed on the back to certify your likeness.
Shared rules with the country overview
These apply to every document this country issues — see the full breakdown on the country page.
Background
Plain light grey or cream. Pure white is technically acceptable but discouraged because it can cause the head outline to blend in. Avoid coloured walls and any pattern.
Expression and eyes
Neutral expression with mouth closed. Both eyes open, clearly visible, looking straight at the camera. No smiling or frowning.
Glasses
Glasses are discouraged — HM Passport Office prefers photos without glasses to avoid glare. If you must wear them, eyes must be fully visible with no reflections and no tinted lenses.
Recency
The photo must have been taken within the last month and must look exactly like you.
