UK BRP Photo Requirements 2026

The Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) photo uses the same 35×45 mm format as a UK passport and visa photo. In practice, the photo on your BRP is captured at the UKVCAS appointment as part of biometric enrolment — you don't submit one separately. The same specification applies if you ever need to provide a backup photo.

Key details

  • BRP photos are typically captured live at the UKVCAS biometric appointment.
  • The replacement BRP application uses the same 35×45 mm spec if a new photo is needed.
  • Note: BRP cards are being phased out in 2025 in favour of eVisas — newer applications may not produce a BRP at all.

Shared rules with the country overview

These apply to every document this country issues — see the full breakdown on the country page.

Background

Plain light grey or cream. Pure white is technically acceptable but discouraged because it can cause the head outline to blend in. Avoid coloured walls and any pattern.

Expression and eyes

Neutral expression with mouth closed. Both eyes open, clearly visible, looking straight at the camera. No smiling or frowning.

Glasses

Glasses are discouraged — HM Passport Office prefers photos without glasses to avoid glare. If you must wear them, eyes must be fully visible with no reflections and no tinted lenses.

Recency

The photo must have been taken within the last month and must look exactly like you.
