UK BRP Photo Requirements 2026

The UK Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) was retired on 31 October 2024 — the Home Office stopped issuing new BRPs and almost all existing cards expired on 31 December 2024. UK immigration status is now held digitally as an eVisa via a free UKVI account at gov.uk. The 35×45 mm BRP photo specification is preserved here as a historical reference; any new biometric data is captured live at a UKVCAS or TLScontact appointment as part of the visa application, with status delivered digitally.

Key details

  • BRP cards are no longer issued. The Home Office stopped issuing BRPs on 31 October 2024 and almost all existing cards expired on 31 December 2024.
  • The 35×45 mm specification is kept here as historical reference — if you have a pre-abolition BRP-era photo or stamp in your passport, it follows the same size as the UK passport photo.
  • The replacement scheme is closed. UK immigration status is now held digitally as an eVisa via a UKVI account at gov.uk; biometrics for any new visa application are captured live at UKVCAS or TLScontact.

Shared rules with the country overview

These apply to every document this country issues — see the full breakdown on the country page.

Background

Plain light grey or cream. Pure white is technically acceptable but discouraged because it can cause the head outline to blend in. Avoid coloured walls and any pattern.

Expression and eyes

Neutral expression with mouth closed. Both eyes open, clearly visible, looking straight at the camera. No smiling or frowning.

Glasses

Glasses are discouraged — HM Passport Office prefers photos without glasses to avoid glare. If you must wear them, eyes must be fully visible with no reflections and no tinted lenses.

Recency

The photo must have been taken within the last month and must look exactly like you.

Frequently asked questions

What size was a UK BRP photo? +
35×45 mm, with the head 29–34 mm from chin to crown — identical to the UK passport specification. The card itself is no longer issued, but this spec applies if you have a BRP-era photo on file.
Are BRP cards still being issued? +
No. The Home Office stopped issuing BRPs on 31 October 2024, almost all existing BRPs expired on 31 December 2024, and the grace period for using expired BRPs as travel documents ended on 1 June 2025. UK immigration status is now held digitally as an eVisa.
I lost my BRP — can I get a new one? +
No. The BRP replacement scheme is closed. Set up a free UKVI account at gov.uk/evisa instead — your eVisa is now the official record of your status.
How does the photo work for an eVisa? +
There is no eVisa photo to upload. New visa applicants have biometrics (including a photo) captured live at a UKVCAS or TLScontact appointment, and the resulting status is delivered digitally as an eVisa rather than as a card.
