Required for non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals (and other non-visa-exempt nationalities) travelling to Germany. Schengen (C) visa covers stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism, family visits, business, conferences, or short medical treatment. National (D) visa is required for stays longer than 90 days — employment, EU Blue Card, study, family reunification, language course, Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card), au pair, vocational training. Visa-exempt nationals (US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, etc.) need no visa for short stays but will need an ETIAS travel authorisation from late 2026 (mandatory from 1 January 2027).

In person at the German Embassy, Consulate-General, or its authorised visa application centre (VFS Global, TLScontact, or VisaMetric depending on country) in your country of legal residence. Online appointment booking is required — slots can be scarce in high-demand markets (India, Turkey, Egypt, Nigeria). Start by completing the VIDEX online form (videx.diplo.de) and printing the signed application sheet to bring to the appointment.

Schengen short-stay (C) visa: €90 for adults, €45 for children 6–11, free for under 6 — the post-2024 increase from the previous €80 fee. National long-stay (D) visa: €75 for adults, €37.50 for minors under 18. A reduced €35 Schengen fee applies to nationals of Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Georgia, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Ukraine under visa-facilitation agreements. Visa fees are non-refundable, even if the application is rejected. Many consulates also charge a VFS Global service fee on top (typically €25–€40) where applications are outsourced. From late 2026, visa-exempt nationals will additionally need an ETIAS travel authorisation (€7, valid 3 years).

Do US, UK, Canadian, and Australian citizens need a visa for Germany? +

No — these and other visa-exempt nationals can visit the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa. From late 2026, however, an ETIAS travel authorisation (€7, valid 3 years) will be required. ETIAS becomes mandatory on 1 January 2027.

What is the 90/180 rule? +

You can spend a maximum of 90 days in the entire Schengen Area (not just Germany) within any rolling 180-day period. The counter is calculated backwards from each day of your stay. Overstaying triggers fines, deportation, and potential Schengen-wide entry bans. The rule applies equally to visa-exempt travellers and to holders of multiple-entry Schengen (C) visas.

Can I work in Germany on a Schengen (C) visa? +

No — a Schengen short-stay visa does not permit employment. Business meetings, conferences, and short-term assignments are permitted, but any paid work or employment relationship requires a national (D) visa for employment, an EU Blue Card, or another work-authorised residence title.

What happens after I arrive in Germany on a national (D) visa? +

Within 90 days of arrival you must register your address (Anmeldung) at the local Bürgeramt, then apply for a residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel / eAT) at the Ausländerbehörde before the D visa expires.
