Schengen (C) visa: 15 calendar days is the legal standard, extendable to 45 days for additional checks and exceptionally up to 60 days. Germany is one of the faster Schengen issuers — 5–10 business days is typical in low season at most consulates. National (D) visa: 4–12 weeks routinely, longer where the Ausländerbehörde must be consulted (employment, family reunion). Skilled-worker D visas processed under the accelerated procedure (beschleunigtes Fachkräfteverfahren) can be cut to 3–4 weeks.

常见问题

关于办理 germany visa 的常见问题。

How much does a German Schengen visa cost in 2026? +
€90 for adults, €45 for children aged 6–11, and free for children under 6. This is the post-2024 fee increase from the previous €80. A reduced €35 fee applies to nationals of visa-facilitation countries (Western Balkans plus Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine).
How much does a German national (D) visa cost? +
€75 for adults, €37.50 for minors under 18. The fee is the same whether you are applying for employment, EU Blue Card, study, family reunion, language course, or the new Chancenkarte. Fees are non-refundable.
How long does it take to get a German visa? +
Schengen (C): 15 calendar days legally, but Germany typically issues in 5–10 business days at most consulates. Up to 45 days if extra documents are requested (60 in exceptional cases). National (D): 4–12 weeks routinely. The accelerated skilled-worker procedure can shorten this to 3–4 weeks but requires the German employer to file Vorabzustimmung with the local Ausländerbehörde first.
How do I apply — what is VIDEX? +
VIDEX is the official online visa application form at videx.diplo.de, available in 12 languages. You complete it online, print the signed application sheet, and bring it to your in-person appointment at the German consulate or its authorised visa centre. There is also a separate online form for national (D) visas under the same VIDEX system.
Do US, UK, Canadian, and Australian citizens need a visa for Germany? +
No — these and other visa-exempt nationals can visit the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa. From late 2026, however, an ETIAS travel authorisation (€7, valid 3 years) will be required. ETIAS becomes mandatory on 1 January 2027.
What is the 90/180 rule? +
You can spend a maximum of 90 days in the entire Schengen Area (not just Germany) within any rolling 180-day period. The counter is calculated backwards from each day of your stay. Overstaying triggers fines, deportation, and potential Schengen-wide entry bans. The rule applies equally to visa-exempt travellers and to holders of multiple-entry Schengen (C) visas.
Can I work in Germany on a Schengen (C) visa? +
No — a Schengen short-stay visa does not permit employment. Business meetings, conferences, and short-term assignments are permitted, but any paid work or employment relationship requires a national (D) visa for employment, an EU Blue Card, or another work-authorised residence title.
What happens after I arrive in Germany on a national (D) visa? +
Within 90 days of arrival you must register your address (Anmeldung) at the local Bürgeramt, then apply for a residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel / eAT) at the Ausländerbehörde before the D visa expires. The D visa is your entry permit; the eAT is your in-country residence permit. See the Germany residence-permit page for that next step.
