Indonesia Passport Photo Requirements 2026

A 'pas foto' is the standard Indonesian ID photo you make yourself for jobs, school, CPNS, SKCK, and visa applications, most commonly in 2x3 cm, 3x4 cm, and 4x6 cm sizes. Backgrounds are usually red or blue (tied to your birth year) or white for formal and passport-related use. Note that the actual passport and e-KTP portraits are captured on-site by an officer, not uploaded by you.

Detailed requirements

Background

For KTP and SIM the background color follows your birth year: red for an odd birth year (ganjil), blue for an even birth year (genap), and orange for foreign nationals. Passport and most formal pas foto use a plain white background.

Expression and eyes

Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open and looking straight at the camera. No wide smile.

Glasses

Glasses are best removed. If worn, frames must not cover the eyes and lenses must be clear with no glare or tint.

Headwear

No hats or caps. Religious head coverings (such as a hijab or peci) are allowed as long as the full face, from chin to hairline, stays visible.

Recency

Use a recent photo (taken within the last 6 months) that reflects your current appearance.

Digital format

For a digital pas foto, export at 300 DPI: 2x3 cm ~ 236x354 px, 3x4 cm ~ 354x472 px, 4x6 cm ~ 472x709 px. Save as JPG or PNG.

Country-specific notes

  • 3x4 cm is the most commonly requested pas foto size for administrative forms.
  • Always confirm the exact size and background color the requesting office asks for before printing.
  • The passport and e-KTP card portraits are taken by an officer on-site, so a self-made pas foto is for other uses (jobs, school, visa, SKCK, etc.).

Common rejection reasons

These are the most frequent reasons passport offices reject submitted photos.

  1. 1 Wrong background color for the purpose (e.g. red/blue mismatch with birth year for KTP/SIM).
  2. 2 Shadows on the face or background, or uneven lighting.
  3. 3 Smiling, tilted head, or eyes not looking at the camera.

How to take it yourself in 3 steps

1

Pick the size and background

Choose 2x3, 3x4, or 4x6 cm and the background color the office needs: red or blue by birth year for KTP/SIM, or white for formal and passport-related use.

2

Take the photo

Face the camera straight on with a neutral expression under even light, shoulders squared, and the full face visible.

3

Crop, set background, and export

Crop to the required size, replace the background with the correct plain color, and export a print-ready JPG or PNG at 300 DPI.
